Mexico offers two distinct pathways. Your immigration status determines which option is available to you.

Temporary Import Permit (TIP)

Keep your vehicle on foreign plates temporarily. Tied to your immigration status.

No import taxes or tariffs
~$51 USD fee + refundable deposit
Not available to Residente Permanente
Vehicle must exit before expiry

Eligible: FMM (tourist), Residente Temporal

Definitive Importation
Pedimento A1

Permanently import your vehicle. Receive Mexican plates. Required for Residente Permanente.

Eligible: All immigration statuses

Residente Permanente — Important

If you hold Residente Permanente status, you are not eligible for a TIP. You must proceed with Definitive Importation.
